Life is what happens while you're waiting for your Facebook profile to load
Published by Nick Hall on 1 March 2010.Did you know the earth weighs 5.9742 x10(24th) kg? How about that the diameter of the observable universe is 93,000,000,000 light years? Big numbers to be sure, and they never fail to make me feel small.
I feel the same way when I watch the videos illustrating the growth of all that is online. Billions of this, trillions of that, exponential growth, etcetera. No doubt you have been exposed to them at some point, as everyone likes to share them (that's how you become an expert, right?). These numbers don't necessarily make me feel small, just that everything is pretty much futile and way more complicated than it needs to be. I then have a panic attack, followed by a quiet walk around the block so I can count the sidewalk cracks: all 921 of them.
When I do occasionally eat a Big Mac, I do not need to know exactly how much sodium is in it. I know it is a lot. Knowing exactly how much will not change my opinion of myself as I eat it. Nor will it stop me from doing so.
If asked by a client how many people are on FaceBook, I say "a lot". They usually nod in agreement.
If that fails to answer, I quickly add, "think Brazil".
